Wrestling star Jonathan Rechner - known professionally as Balls Mahoney - has died, aged 44.

There is no official word as yet on the cause of Rechner's death, but he had just celebrated his birthday on Monday before news broke of his tragic passing on Wednesday morning.

It was reported that Rechner had been suffering from a short-term illness, just days after injuring his hip following a bad fall at his home in New Jersey.

The news came as a shock to his former employers WWE , while a host of wrestlers paid homage to the former ECW original after learning his tragic fate.

A statement from WWE on Wednesday morning read: "WWE is saddened to learn of reports that Jonathan Rechner, best known for competing in ECW as Balls Mahoney, has passed away.

"WWE extends its condolences to Rechner's family, friends and fans."

The 6ft 2in star was a fans' favourite in Extreme Championship Wrestling in the late 1990s, where he was famed for his hardcore stunts.

He was remembered for his tag team pairing with Axl Rotten - who was found dead at a motel in Baltimore in February, also aged 44 - with the duo nicknamed the "hardcore chair swinging freaks".

Rechner spent three years in the WWE before his release in April 2008, when he returned to the independent wrestling circuit fighting for several companies including TNA and Ring of Honour.

He is survived by his wife and eight-year-old son.

I'm amazed he was only 44. Seems to have been around forever!
